Save the Brum Hinternet

(3 posts)
  1. The hinternet is the old, hard to find, unconnected interweb — it's stuff that's starting to disappear (Geocities is closing, people just forget to keep stuff up). Some of it will be kept on Archive.org - but that's not indexed or findable. We could find a way to keep these old sites alive.

I guess we'd need some kind of front end & 'this is mine you've nicked it' system to explain to people how the stuff came to be there.

This week we've already thought about the Fuzzbox official site and the site about the Birmingham Anchor — there must be tons of this stuff out there (Virtual Brum is a case in point).

So - what would we need to do to save and keep this stuff up? Can we get hinternet.paradisecrcus.com open for business?

  2. I have an old b13.net site from the late 90s that I should get back online somewhere.
I've also managed to grab the Geociites Fuzzbox site.

As far as I can tell, we can just create a static page with a list of links, pointing to a separate folder for each site. A modest amount of tinkering should get them working pretty quickly - and I'm happy to volunteer to do some of that tinkering.

After that someone just needs to write a paragraph of copy to put at the top of the static page and create an email address for those wanting to a) submit sites and b) claim some kind of ownership over the work.

I don't think any of this should take very long but I only have limited time before end of next week (12th June) as I'm mostly trying to launch artbrum.co.uk at the moment.
