it'd be good for us to get a few dates in advance on the calendar rather than sorting it out a couple of days before.

i propose:

june 7: the flapper
july 13: the old contemptibles (we've not been there for ages, & i don't remember any complaints)
august 11: the malt house
september 16: the anchor
october 11: the living room

any complaints or suggestions for other places it'd be nice to go to ?

the june date is the awkward one, in terms of the second week in june falling early rather than late, but i don't think that's a real problem.

shall we also schedule a saturday / sunday in later june / early july for a picnic in cannon hill park ?

I've heard the "brum social media scene" described as a clique a couple of times — and while from my perspective i don't see that it is (it's grown from 0 to a loose network of 100s in just a year) the perception is as damaging (almost) as it actually being one.

So - how do we widen the circle?

I've been struggling to come up with a good way of collecting Brum-webbery-esque events together — it's so easy to create a blog or a FB group for each individual strand that some really interesting stuff gets missed because information is splintered and then disseminated across ambient networks (twitter especially).

So, without a better idea (or having to do it physically myself), the best way I can come up with is to use the ;Brum Bloggers Upcoming Group — to which anyone can join and add an event. You can add events created by others to the group - I'm thinking Multipack, Hackspace (now FizzPop) or anything really.

You can then subscribe to the feed, direct to your calendar if you so wish (how to do this).

To try an broaden it out I've changed the name of the group to "Paradise Circus"

Jon Bounds on "Save the Brum Hinternet"

The hinternet is the old, hard to find, unconnected interweb — it's stuff that's starting to disappear (Geocities is closing, people just forget to keep stuff up). Some of it will be kept on Archive.org - but that's not indexed or findable. We could find a way to keep these old sites alive.

I guess we'd need some kind of front end & 'this is mine you've nicked it' system to explain to people how the stuff came to be there.

This week we've already thought about the Fuzzbox official site and the site about the Birmingham Anchor — there must be tons of this stuff out there (Virtual Brum is a case in point).

So - what would we need to do to save and keep this stuff up? Can we get hinternet.paradisecrcus.com open for business?

As you know I'm a ha-yooge fan of Friction Arts' Echoes From The Edge exhibition. It’s an amazing, immersive experience featuring the voices of locals such as John Tighe and yours truly telling our stories. I've convinced Sandra to let us lot descend on her at 2pm next Saturday 30th May. Please let me know ASAP if you'd like to join me - there are 9 blogger places to be had. It's £4 per person and well worth the money. Afterwards we'll experience Digbeth life firsthand in one of the local pubs. ;-)

My praise-filled review of the show is here: http://digbeth.org/2009/05/echoes-from-the-edge-2/

Hi all,

We have vacancies as RateMyPlacement Guest Bloggers that are a great way of advising your peers, will be a great addition to your CV, and all this without leaving your computer…

The job of a RateMyPlacement Guest Blogger is a straightforward one! We’ll host every blog that you write throughout your time on placement at RateMyPlacement.co.uk. You can visit the site to meet this year’s bloggers and read their material, but generally the blogs can be about anything you are experiencing on placement including the social side, responsibilities within a role or even the inside scoop on the company itself. We do realise that you’re on a placement to work, therefore one blog a week, or two a month would be perfect!

If you think you have what it takes to become a RateMyPlacement Guest Blogger, please email cara on cara@RateMyPlacement.co.uk stating your university, your degree, your year of study and a brief paragraph about yourself.

There are also other opportunities to become part of the RateMyPlacement team, if you are doing a summer internship this year, why not become a Rep for us and earn some money, click here for more information or email reps@RateMyPlacement.co.uk.

Howdy partners! It may have come to some peeps attention that a number of Brummie bods will be whooshing over to Texas all transatlantic stylee for SXSW (South by South West) later next week, to mingle and schmooze with web wizards, net honchos and to do some other shizz, like having fun. Not wishing to be outdone by this, a furious flurry of Twitter activity this evening has registered interest in a counter-event to these southern States shennanigans: WXWM. That'll be West by West Midlands, then.

In our own, special style of Western Midlands tradition, the aim is to show 'em how it's done, Brummie style. The main aim is, simply, to have fun and be able to be a very disjointed part of SXSW (and bag about those who are there in a jovial way).

Date: Saturday March 14th

Time: TBC, but likely to be late afternoon, trundling in a wibby wobbly way into the night

Venue: TBC. Venue suggestions welcome, but must accommodate two key criteria: lashings of beer and wifi. Current venues under consideration are Coffee Lounge (Bham City Centre), Kitchen Garden Cafe (B14) and Hare and Hounds (B14). More suggestions are welcome and it all needs to be firmed up soon, thank you lovelies.

Theme: This is optional, but it'd be great to bring some real Texan values to the table. Mad huge shoulder pads, stetsons, JR Ewing, being abducted from a ranch by aliens, “Yeehaww!” and Sue Ellen's alcohol habit – just a few things to whet the appetite. The more inventive, the better.

Volunteers needed: Technical svengalis and gurus – we would like to be able to Twitter, live vid conference (important) and livestream video to t'internet. Hardware, software, daywear, eveningwear – if you have the shonk 'n' shovel to help, please let us know! Also, anyone who fancies a bit of a stand up gig, summat along the lines of this would be skill: http://peteashton.com/2008/03/merlin_manns_worst_website_ever/

Time is of the essence, so interested peepe, voluntary wizards and cowboy/girl spirits, please get jiggy with your keyboard and pitch in......now!

:)

Inspired by very little more than the easy group "blog things" you can now do on tumblr.com and the wonder that is the portmanteau word "brumblr", Jules has set up brumblr.co.uk - which is, you've guessed, a group tumblr for (and about) brum.

We figured that there are already a lot of us using tumblr (and if not it's really easy) and while we might already have plenty of blogs "things about brum" aren't always important or relevant to stick up on existing places. Thinking quick links, photos, gig flyers, anything really.

So, that's it all welcome to join and poke brum-related stuff up the brumblr.

Unfortunately the only way in is to be invited by email, so either drop me or jules a line, or leave a comment here & we'll fix you up.

This is mainly prompted by the stuff going on around Amplified (in short, a national project to get the various networks around the country to come together for a big event in 2010) but also because it's about time.

Let's start listing all the various groups, networks and such that exist in Birmingham. From the Blogmeets to the programmer groups and so on. The criteria here is those who have both an online and offline presence. In other words they use social media tools to gather and have a regular-ish meetup in the city.

Once we've got a decent list we'll start thinking about what we can do with it.

I've added an event to the upcoming group because Gisela Stuart has expressed a desire to meet with the bloggers of Birmingham.

I've been extolling the virtues of twitter, youtube etc to her and how it can be useful for campaigning, creating community and encouraging transparency.

Need suggestions for a suitable venue to meet in and also who would be interested in coming along.

Transferring a truncated Twitter conversation over here!

Does gender matter online? I think not, but others seem to think so. Chat away :)

I don't know about anyone else, but I feel as though I've only got a little bit of the picture of Birmingham's creative industries.

Therefore I'd be interested in a short talk/presentation (at a bloggers meet) on the various creative organisations in Birmingham (eg Creative Republic, Created in Birmingham, Custard Factory, Digital Birmingham) and how they all fit together.

Does that sound worthwhile?

I spent yesterday afternoon in the pub with with Shona McQuillan (@graphiquillan on Twitterland), where she had a little brainwave that we think is pure genius for the next Brum Bloggers Meet.

GREAT BIG SAUSAGE BLONGO
Basically, all people coming get a card which has a grid of, say, 3x3 names (9) of Brum bloggers intending to go. Others coming to brumbloggers will have to speak to the Blongo card people who'll wear a Santa hat/Wizbit outfit (Sona's suggestion, that) for conspicuousness. They have to put a keyword each Blongo blogger will give them next to their name to tick them off. When they've spoken to all of them and ticked them all off the grid they can shout 'BLONGO' and win the great big German markets sausage. Or something. To accomodate for the inevitable Blongo card couple not turning up, Brum Bloggers on the list who are there can say Joker keywords (we have some in mind) - when people are given these they can tick off Blongo names of people that aren't there. Make sensy? We're so hoping you're up for this as we LOVED it, although our enthusiasm was fuelled by alcohol. But in the cold light of day, I'm still well up for it. As well as silly it'll encourage networking and talking to each other and mingling and that.

Cheers, Nicky.

Carrying this on from Twitter, where the @ symbols were threatening to take over the conversation. I'll do a summary of where we're at in a bit.

Any feedback about the event from either 'patients' or 'surgeons'?

Any online activity emerged as a direct or indirect result of the surgery? I am thinking I will email the 'patients' in a few days to say that we hope they enjoyed the event and found it useful and could they let us know about any resulting online activity so that we can help publicise it.

One thing that occured to me is that if we get more people coming to another surgery, we might need a bigger room.

Since we started having meet-ups we've moved venues around the city, maybe just for variety but also in search of the perfect spot.

We've found good pubs, and that the outskirts of the city centre have a good balance of travel connections and places that are empty enough to take over on a weekday evenings. But we've never found anywhere "to call home" ;)

What's your fav venue we've tried? Or where should we try next?

Hi all,

Facebook does not provide RSS feeds for its group walls and discussions, so things were getting missed. So we're encouraging people to have discussions here instead.
