March Meet-up – Monday 9th at The Green Room

I really enjoyed the last meet-up we had at The Green Room, it was nicely relaxed and seemed easy for everyone — for in the absence of any other venue wishes that’s where March’s Bloggers’ Meet-up will be.

As ever it’s a very informal evening, with people welcome to drop in at anytime – from straight after work to a swift half before last orders. We’re not that fussed if you “blog”, or “twitter” or anything, it’s just nice to hang out with people that you don’t have to explain “the Internet’ to once in a while.

Please come along and meet people “off of the web”, bring some money for your drinks — there’s no agenda, no sponsors and nothing except friendly chat.

Time: from 6pm to chucking out time

Date: Monday 9th March (see here for how we work out when bloggers’ meet-ups are)

Venue: The Green Room, The Arcadian Centre, Hurst Street. (Map)

Who should we give Here Comes Everybody to?

shirky-1As you probably know, Clay Shirky’s Here Comes Everybody is now out in paperback. Amazon have it for £5.99. I’ve found it a very useful book this last year to lend to people to explain exactly what I’m on about. Even if you disagree with his conclusions the examples he gives are worth it alone.

I’m going to buy five copies and send them to people in Birmingham. I want you to tell me who to send them to. And I want to include a letter, written by us, explaining why we want them to read it (I’ll set up a wiki for that later).

Sensible suggestions please. Think of people who will actually read and digest the book, those who have the capacity to understand and be excited by it. They don’t have to be big names but ideally they’ll have the ability to make important changes in the city.

And it doesn’t have to be limited to five. That’s just my commitment. If someone else wants to buy a batch and send them out that’s great. The main thing is we send them to the right people.

Birmingham Hackerspace?

This is a public service announcement on behalf of a Birmingham Hackerspace:

There’s been a lot of discussion about a London Hacklab forming, and us in Birmingham are jumping on the bandwagon. We’d like to get as many people together to talk about what we could do, to bring a hacklab/openspace/hackerspace to Birmingham.

“A hackerspace or hackspace (from Hacker and Space) is a real (as opposed to virtual) place where people with common interests, usually in science, technology, or digital or electronic art can meet, socialise and collaborate.” – WIkipedia

This will hopefully be a place where people can explore technology, blog about their surroundings, meet and organise themselves. Even though it is usually geek based, more interesting, and innovative things will happen the more people use it.

We have the pre-requisite mailing list.

We are probably going to be meeing at The Bull in Birmingham City centre. (Geek friendly, with wifi)

Although this maybe subject to change, so sign up to the mailing list to keep up to date.

To arrange a time a meet-o-matic form has been set up. So please put in the times that are best for you. PM = 6pm-10pm.

Please tell your friends about this, blog about it, twitter it. At the moment we just need to build up interest and people that want to actually *do* something. The more people we tell, the more likely we
are to find those that we need to get his off the ground.
