Blog Action Day – October 15th
Last year the organised of Blog Action Day invited people to add a post to their blog about the environment, it was a huge success in terms of numbers. Blog Action Day is:
Blog Action Day is an annual nonprofit event that aims to unite the world’s bloggers, podcasters and videocasters, to post about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion.
This year the theme is poverty. While I’d encourage everyone to sign up and commit to writing a post from their own blog’s angle (just go over to the site and sign up) I’ve talked to a few other people and thought that it might be nice to have a co-ordninated effort from Brum.
Maybe we could pick a local organisation to focus on, get them some google juice, maybe even help them a little with getting into the social web as an organisation.
We’ve got ten days, so shall we have a talk about what we could do? Anyone got an organisation in mind?

The Big SleepOut for St.Basils is happening on December 5th to raise awareness about youth homelessness and we could encourage some bloggers to take part? Perhaps it could be December’s Bloggers’ Meet!
I’m sleeping rough a few weeks beforehand to raise awareness about it.

Great idea Stef!
I was going to suggest Birmingham City mission and work with homeless so thinking along the same lines! My kids’ school are collecting stuff for BCM as their harvest event rather than food – toiletries, underwear, blankets etc.

I hadn’t quite decided what I was going to blog about.
I wanted to do something local and maybe looking at the impact of poverty on children and young people.
Ladywood was found to be one of the most deprived areas in the UK. It was also visited by the secret millionaire.
I’m not sure how useful “sleep outs” are as a way of raising awareness. They’re great for feeling a direct sense of empathy with homeless people but as a method of mass awareness raising I’m not sure how well it works. And having been homeless I feel they could be a little insulting.
Freshwinds could be an interesting organisation to champion.
That’s interesting Ben, (the Stan’s Café guys used childhood poverty in Ladywood as one of their stats too).
I guess that getting people to blog about a sleep-out would raise awareness?
Have you got a link for Freshwinds? What do they do?
The other side of this – as Jon has suggested – is helping organisations which work with or are run by the poorest communities start to benefit from social media.
So — could we establish one enormous Social Media Surgery and invite as many organisations as possible to come along and learn something?

Did not realise that Blog Action Day existed! I’ll see what might be done in Blackpool on the 15th.
Thanks for the info folks!
I love the Social Media Surgery idea.

Communities hit hardest by life limiting illnesses are usually some of the poorest.
